High Magnetic Susceptibility Liquid Metals

Abstract

We discuss the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic moment formation in high magnetic susceptibility pure liquid rare earth and transition metals. After an analysis of an obvious case, the magnetic susceptibility of liquid gadolinium, we apply a local-density-functional, linear response, definition of the local enhanced spin susceptibility, and a local Stoner-like stability criterion to liquid iron to show how a localized magnetic moment develops and the resulting magnetic susceptibility.
