Novel Chromogenic Ionophores for Determination of Sodium and Potassium in Biological Fluids: Synthesis and Applications

  • Chapter
Inclusion Phenomena and Molecular Recognition

Abstract

Although the majority of clinical chemistry tests run on automated clinical analyzers are based on spectrophotometric determinations, sodium and potassium assays generally involve the use of ion-selective electrodes or flame photometry for direct analysis of both ions in blood and other body fluids. Therefore, it would be highly desirable to develop spectrophotometric methods for sodium and potassium which were readily adaptable to clinical analyzers.
