Abstract

The ATP photoaffinity probe arylazido-β-alanyl ATP is able to inhibit the ATP dependent reactions of the Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophore membrane in a specific and light dependent manner. Following the light induced photoprobe interaction with LiCl treated chromatophores (resolved of the ATPase β subunit), the LiCl dialyzed supernatant (i.e., β subunit) is still capable of reconstituting photophosphorylation as in the non-photoprobe treated membrane. However, the ability of the β subunit preparation to reconstitute membrane bound ATPase activity is inhibited.
