Central Projections of Cervical Primary Afferents in the Rat. Some General Anatomical Principles and their Functional Significance

  • Chapter
The Primary Afferent Neuron

Abstract

Since the classical studies of Longet (1845), Bárány (1906), de Kleijn (1921) and Magnus (1924) many scientific activities have been devoted to the exploration of the central mechanisms of body, head and eye movement coordination (for reviews see Biemond and de Jong, 1969; Precht, 1974; Hülse, 1983; Mergner et al., 1983; Precht, 1983b). Proprioceptors in the skeleto-muscular system of the neck registrate position and movements of the head with respect to the trunk, and cooperate with the vestibular apparatus in posture control (Kornhuber, 1966; Guedry, 1974; Kasper and Thoden, 1981; Stampacchia et al., 1987). They have proved to be important for the tonic neck reflex apparatus (Magnus, 1924; Lindsay et al., 1976; Brink et al., 1985; for review see Wilson, 1988), for cervico-ocular reflexes (DeKleijn, 1921; Barmack et al., 1981), as well as for cervico-collic reflexes (Peterson et al., 1985; Chan et al., 1987). Furthermore, they are suspected to play a pivotal role in certain cervical syndromes (Decher, 1969; Hülse, 1983).
