Abstract

Calcium plays a major role in a wide range of cellular functions. In the extracellular fluid matrix, calcium is present in millimolar concentrations, whereas free intracellular calcium is up to 10,000 times less plentiful. This compartmentalization is accomplished by (1) limited permeability of the resting plasma membrane to calcium, (2) cellular mechanisms for calcium extrusion, (3) buffering within the cytosol, and (4) sequestration of calcium into intracellular organelles.1
