Abstract
PTH exerts effects on both the renal and extrarenal regulation of acidbase homeostasis. This brief revue will highlight the effects of the hormone on urinary acidification and on the whole body buffering of acid loads. Several balance studies will be cited to illustrate the integration of the renal and extrarenal effects of the peptide in the whole animal. Finally, I will discuss the modulating effect of metabolic acidosis on the anticalciuric action of PTH.
