Abstract

Soft condensed matter is of paramount importance both as final product and processing intermediate. This paper describes the role of this unusual state of matter, in the form of polymeric liquid crystals and gels, as processing intermediates, or precursors, in manufacturing technologies of high-performance polymer materials. The unique structure of soft condensed matter intermediates allows particular conformational changes, rearrangement and packing of long chain molecules, yielding materials with exceptional mechanical properties. Of practical importance and scientific interest is that the structure of these soft intermediates can be controlled in a detailed manner, which is dramatically reflected in their processing characteristics and properties of the final materials. The correlation between the structure of the soft condensed matter and the properties of the resulting high-performance materials will be elucidated. In addition, some recent uses and an unusual synthesis of this unique state of matter will be presented.
