Tumor Markers in Bronchioalveolar Lavage

  • Chapter
Biochemistry of Chemical Carcinogenesis

Abstract

Tumor markers may be defined as a series of chemical products that can be produced by a tumor or that can accompany it during its development and evolution reflecting the different changes occurring when the cells enter upon a neoplastic transformation.

Bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL) consists of the introduction of some quantity of sterile isotonic serum in the airways with posterior aspiration of it.

By using radioimmunoassay techniques it has been possible to quantify four tumor markers: tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) neuron specific enolase (NSE) and ferritin in the cell-free supernatant of cells coming from 17 BAL of patients with etiopathogenetic processes showing tumoral characteristics (oat cells, epidermoid carcinoma, adenocarcinoma).

The result was the finding of higher concentrations of these parameters in comparison with the ones found in 22 BAL of a reference group, being possible to define different statistically significant relations.
