Abstract
Two carcinogens, DMBA and MNU were compared for their ability to affect both epithelial and fibrous cell components of rat mammary tissue. Under given dosage regimens epithelium was more susceptible to both carcinogens than connective tissue in the early phase of tumor induction, whereas adenocarcinomas prevailed with a variable content of normal stroma. Repeated local doses of MNU evoked sarcomas of fibrous origin long after the epithelial tumors. The use of biochemical markers of tumor cell heterogeneity contributed to the knowledge about the role of fibrous elements in morphological alterations of primary and transplantable rat mammary tumors. Enzymatic activity of -glutamyltransferase (GGT) discriminated between epitherial and sarcomatous tumor components. Lectin binding capacity signaled a transition from epithelial to anaplastic tumor forms but did not reflect tissue origin in stained cells.
