LANSF — A Modular System for Modelling Low-Level Communication Protocols

Abstract

We present LANSF — a modular programming system for modeling communication protocols at the Medium Access Control level. The most interesting aspects of uch protocols manifest themselves in Local Area Networks. LANSF is based on an exact model of communication channels which reflects all relevant elements of their temporal behaviour. The system offers a collection of tools for defining network architectures, specifying protocols, defining traffic conditions, modeling, and tracing the network behaviour on-line. Although originally designed for modeling Local Area Networks, LANSF was successfully used for investigating other distributed systems. LANSF runs under UNIX(2) and is available upon request from the authors.
