National Cancer Institute Satellite Symposium on Fiber and Colon Cancer

  • Chapter
Dietary Fiber

Abstract

The vast majority of research studies on dietary fiber and cancer have focused on colon cancer. In the United States today the incidence and mortality rates for colon cancer are second only to those for lung cancer (Silverberg and Lubera, 1988). The mortality from this malignancy has not changed materially in the past 50 years, highlighting the lack of effective therapy. As a consequence, prevention appears to offer the best opportunity to control this disease.
