Action of Dietary Fiber on the Satiety Cascade

  • Chapter
Dietary Fiber

Abstract

The present era in the late 20th century is a particularly appropriate time to consider the potential effects of dietary fiber on food consumption and body weight and on the mechanisms controlling appetite. There are good reasons for looking closely at processes of appetite control in view of certain cultural forces that currently influence people’s patterns of consumption. On the one hand, in western industrial societies obesity has reached epidemic proportions (Van Itallie and Abraham, 1985; Garrow, 1982). Associated with this is a powerful cultural ideology characterized by a pursuit of slimness mainly by regulated or casual dieting. Consequently, many individuals—particularly women—perceive the need to curtail their hunger, eat selectively, and reduce energy intake. This doctrine exerts a potent effect on life styles.

Satiety is a complex sensation but an important one in the therapeutic use of dietary fibre. Since we aim to treat the whole patient, not just the process of absorption, a better understanding of satiety is fundamental to achieving good compliance.
