Fiber Metabolism and Colonic Water

  • Chapter
Dietary Fiber

Abstract

The physiology of the colon is difficult to investigate, partly because structure and function vary between species and findings in experimental animals are not necessarily applicable to man (Phillips, 1988). In addition, differences in ileal effluent that are dependent on diet and biliary secretions and bacterial metabolism in the colon result in feces that can vary both qualitatively and quantitatively (Eastwood et al., 1984).
