Abstract
A striking characteristic of Chlamydomonas flagella is that they transform into sexual organelles during gametogenesis. They mediate a species-specific adhesion or agglutination reaction between cells of opposite mating type, due to the presence of molecules called agglutinins which are located on their surface. This interaction between flagella serves not only to maintain sexually compatible cells in close proximity, but also to generate an intracellular signal which prepares the cells for fusion. The most important response is the protrusion of a specialized zone of the cell surface called the mating structure, which is located at the anterior end of the cell near the flagellar bases. Activation of the mating structure is accompanied by the local hydrolysis of the cell wall.
