Abstract

The term aquaculture as used in this book refers to the culture of finfish, shellfish, other aquatic animals, and aquatic plants in either freshwater or salt water. The term has supplanted mariculture, which was once used to indicate the culture of animals and plants in marine or brackish water environments. Mariculture is no longer a valid term, emphasized by the changing of the name of the World Mariculture Society to the World Aquaculture Society several years ago.
