Abstract
The role of light for the biota is manyfold; however, basically two major purposes can be distinguished:
-
the energy of captured photons is utilized for energetic reasons such as in the various forms of photosynthesis which will be covered in this NATO ASI extensively and
-
it serves as a key signal informing an organism about important aspects of its environment.
