Abstract
Coherent subpicosecond charge oscillations have been observed in several recent experiments performed on GaAs/GaALAs quantum well1 and superlattice2 samples. In such experiments a single femtosecond laser pulse photoexcites from the valence band to a superposition state consisting of two or more eigenfunctions in the conduction band. The time-varying interference between these wave functions gives rise to an ultrafast wave packet motion. This wave packet motion manifests itself as periodic tunneling between the two wells in a coupled quantum well system or as a Bloch oscillation in a biased superlattice.
