Abstract
Itinerant magnetism of surfaces of transition metals represents an important and interesting field benefiting from recent progress in sample preparation techniques as well as from modern methods of electronic structure calculations of ground state properties. The latter are based on the local spin density approximation (LSDA) and provide both parameter-free explanations of experimental results and predictions of new phenomena. Systematic ab-initio investigations1 of low-index transition metal surfaces revealed surface enhancement of local magnetic moments of magnetic 3d metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cr) which is due to reduced coordination. Special attention was paid to further transition elements (especially to V, Rh, and Pd) which were supposed to exhibit surface magnetism of a non-magnetic bulk metal.
