Abstract

A discrete volume element scheme is developed for the analysis of vacuum roughing process of long conduits with large cross sections. Local conductances for such configuration become highly dependent upon the local vacuum level and the overall conductance of the conduit varies dynamically. Numerical schemes are developed to evaluate at each time iteration the overall conductance and hence to establish the pressure profile along the conduit. Time history of the pressure profile along the conduit is presented, and techniques used for computation of conductance due to local flow restrictions are discussed. Dynamic iterations yield time required to complete the roughing process.
