Abstract
In our studies of preventing the contamination of plant commodities by the carcinogenic fungal toxin, aflatoxin, we found that growth of the toxigenic fungus, Aspergillus flavus, was strongly inhibited by cecropin A (CA). Cecropins, originally found in insects, are antimicrobial polypeptides inert to eukaryotes but biocidal to prokaryotes (Boman and Hultmark, 1987). Examing the antimicrobial activity of CA further, we found that the activity was inhibited by a bacterial membrane component, lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In this paper we describe the physicochemical interaction of LPS with CA and the concomitant inhibition of the microbicdal activity of CA.
