Abstract

In the design of new and improved vaccines based on defined subunit or peptide approaches it is essential to consider those elements required to produce long term protective immunity in the host. Whilst in most, if not all, cases these will be complex and multifactorial it is clearly necessary to identify the key immunogens required for the vaccine. In the case of peptide vaccines these immunogens will be the B-cell and T-cell epitopes which when combined will provide the desired immune response uniformly in a broad outbred population. This uniformity of response can present problems when dealing with such defined antigens due to genetic restriction and has presented a major challenge to those working on peptide based vaccines.
