Abstract
Recently, the literature has been burdened with a futile discussion concerning which quantities are the most appropriate for being displayed by a CO-oximeter. The introduction of the first CO-oximeter by IL®, displaying fractional concentrations started all this. Since CO-oximeters are replacing the traditional VanSlyke determination as gold standard for quantities pertaining to oxygen transport the definitions of these variables have to be reconsidered.
