Ascorbic Acid and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Subcellular Biochemistry ((SCBI,volume 25))

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative disease of large and medium-sized arteries characterized by loss of elasticity of arterial walls with stenosis (narrowing) of the arterial lumen. The stenosis is due to local thickening of the tunica intima, the innermost layer of the arterial wall. The principal manifestations of atherosclerosis are myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Thus, atherosclerotic vascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Western civilizations (Gotto and Farmer, 1988).
