Abstract

In this paper we have presented a methodology for the optimal placement of backbone structures in a rural and semi-urban telecommunication network. A practical example is considered to demonstrate that the methodology can assist the network designer. A digital representation of the map of the region where the network has to be placed is used. A clustering algorithm is proposed to obtain the clusters of potential users. These are then taken into account to optimally place backbones in the network. A modified differential evolution optimization algorithm is used for this purpose. Economic viability for the installation of network is discussed.
