Abstract
The creation of a Max-Planck-Institut for Mathematics in Bonn (Mathematical Intelligencer, Vol. 7 (1985), No. 2, 41–52) reminds us of earlier efforts to set up a similar establishment devoted to the development of German mathematics.
Walter Kaufmann-Bühler enjoyed writing imaginary history. This article, along with a few biographies of non-existent mathematicians, was found among his papers.
