Abstract
In Section 13.4 we discussed the stationary bound states in the attractive Coulomb potential. The bound-state wave functions were characterized by three quantum numbers, the principal quantum number n, total angular-momentum quantum number ℓl, and the quantum number m of the z component of angular momentum. The energies of the bound states are all negative, E n = −Mc2α/(2n2). The set of the bound states in the hydrogen atom is not complete. Since the Coulomb potential vanishes at infinity there exists also a set of continuum scattering states for all positive energy eigenvalues E.
