Abstract

Two families have a member diagnosed with diabetes. Both families initially are in pain and have difficulty adjusting. Months later one family has for the most part returned to a normal life style despite the need for adherence to treatment protocols. The other family remains centered on the disease, dropping out of many of their usual activities; they are overwhelmed and burdened by the treatment protocol. Prior to the illness both of these families were well adjusted. In fact, the family that had the most difficulty adjusting was the more educated and financially successful one.
