Abstract
Many people turn to their physician for help when they have problems related to sexual concerns. Sexual problems not only can cause lessening of overall quality of life but also can, over time, erode otherwise good marital relationships. The most common factors related to sexual problems are misinformation, performance anxiety, and boredom, issues that family physicians are in an ideal position to address. Sometimes a sexual problem is the symptom of broader marital problems. The physician should rule this out by asking some screening questions. As discussed in Chapter 22, a four-question screen can usual detect serious marital problems: How are decisions made by the couple? How does the couple experience closeness with each other and allow independent activities? How is anger expressed? Is sexuality satisfactory for both partners?
