Abstract
The eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia most often develop during adolescence or the early twenties. Commonly patients deny having a problem, particularly those with anorexia nervosa. Families are often in denial as well. The family physician is frequently the first person to see patients with these problems, as they are usually highly resistant to going to mental health specialists. Early intervention by the family physician can prevent the problems from solidifying, making the treatment much easier and effective. If anorexia nervosa goes untreated for more than a year, cure takes many years at best.
