Abstract
Doctors take care to communicate with their patients, carefully examining them, assessing the problem, and conscientiously developing an appropriate treatment plan. A week later the patient is no better. Upon further investigation the doctor finds that the patient had not adhered to the plan. The doctor naturally feels thwarted and cynical about attempting to help the patient further. The patient’s behavior appears to be irrational and self-destructive.
