Abstract
In the frontispiece of William Harvey’s book on the generation of animals published in Latin (1651) there is a wonderful engraving of the god Zeus liberating living beings from an egg (1). On the egg Zeus holds in his hands is inscribed ex ovo omnia (all things come from eggs). As I wondered about my contribution to this volume on the blastocyst, I finally developed the corollary ex jolliculi ovo. Although I cannot claim perfection in the Latin declination of that statement, the sentiment is that all eggs come from follicles. We believe that good eggs are more capable of fertilization and make good embryos and that good embryos survive our culture methods and become good blastocysts.
