Abstract

In Chapter 1, it was asserted that the climate is a stable system, and we saw that stable systems are associated with negative feedbacks. Where, then, is the negative feedback in the climate system? It is contained within the simplest possible climate model, that for a planet with no atmosphere. Constructing this model introduces the units and dimensions used throughout this chapter.
