Abstract
It will be understood that in the confines of this book it has not been possible to cite the over 3,500 sources which were recorded, analysed, and evaluated for the present biography, which was first published in 1978 and now is virtually a new work. This source material embraces specialist scientific journals and monographs both in and outside Germany (primarily from 1896 to 1944), literature on the history of the times and the history of science as well as contemporary, further information which was only to be gained from daily papers and periodicals of the years 1910 to 1912, 1930 to 1944, and from 1945 to the present day, and further material from archives and personal effects. From the abundance of primary and secondary bibliographical literature used, only the most important publications up to the present day have been cited, ordered by the year of publication.
