Abstract
Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker was fond of reading the latest issue of Physical Review in the Berlin underground. He continued doing so during the war without worrying about the disapproving looks of the other passengers at the ‘enemy literature’. Its reading was worth all that. Almost every issue of this American research journal contained papers about uranium fission. Von Weizsäcker was even more astonished when he found within the issue for July/August 1940 nothing other than harmless articles on the uranium problem.
