The Global Shrimp Market
World shrimp consumption has been on the increase since the 1970s, especially in Japan, Western Europe, and the United States (Clay 1996). Until the 1980s, almost all the world’s supply came from wild fisheries. Then, in the 1980s, the ancient practice of aquaculture began to take an increasing share of the market through use of modern methods of concentrated production and increasing yield (Figure 18.1).
