Abstract

In this chapter we begin the systematic formulation and development of the heavy traffic models. We start with the uncontrolled case of a single processor or queue, where the concepts are simplest and can be handled with minimal notation. The results serve as a foundation for the subsequent work on networks and controls and are a simpler venue in which to develop an intuitive feeling for the methods. Many of the basic ideas in the formulation, scaling, and proofs carry over to the network case, with only minor modifications.
