Abstract

Stem flies or bean flies are small dipterans of the family Agromyzidae, mostly in the genera Ophiomyia and Melanagromyza. Several species of these and other closely related genera are well adapted to feeding on leguminous plants. The maggots of these flies are known either as leafminers or as petiole, stem, or root borers. The most comprehensive revision of the Agromyzidae of economic importance was published by Spencer (1973). The system of nomenclature and much of the basic biological information contained in this chapter were extracted from that treatise.
