Abstract
Rising health care costs have precipitated a clamor for government intervention in the system, particularly for national health insurance (NHI). United States health spending currently exceeds $160 billion annually and is increasing by 15 percent every year. In five years it will double. The private sector has an enormous stake in the problem: of the current $160 billion figure, we expend about $100 billion. It is evident that we in the private sector should be thinking and doing something about this now. We do not believe that the search for a solution should be left to the government and NHI legislation.
