Abstract
Trade unions have an important stake, both economically and socially, in making health systems more equitable and efficient. All unions negotiate for health benefits of one kind or another and therefore become involved in the health problems of their memberships. Our most direct stake is that the higher costs of health must often be paid at the expense of higher wages. Relatively few union health funds have gone the route of self-insurance. We feel that this is unfortunate because self-insurance, when properly administered, can be the most effective means of providing quality care and assuring cost control.
