Abstract

The skin is unique, being the largest organ of the body, with the greatest diversity of functions, as follows:

  1. 1.

Protection. The skin is waterproof and shields the body from microbial, mechanical, actinic, and chemical insults of the environment.

  2. 2.

Body temperature regulation. Heat loss is prevented by fat and hair coat. Conversely, heat is removed from the body through water evaporation from the epidermis and sweat glands.

  3. 3.

Sensory perception. Receptors for heat, cold, touch, pressure, and pain are present.

  4. 4.

Excretion. Sweat, cerumen, sebum, salts, and possibly pheromones, are secreted from appendages of the skin.

  5. 5.

    Vitamin D and melanin synthesis.

  6. 6.

Storage of blood, water, electrolytes, fats, and vitamins.
