Abstract

Samples of blood and its various components, bone marrow, urine, or other body fluids may be required for clinical laboratory tests as aids to the examination and evaluation of the hemic system. As for any other biologic investigation, the first prerequisite in the evaluation of the hemic system is that the techniques employed must be of a recognized standard of accuracy. Good laboratory technique begins with the collecting and careful labeling of the specimens collected. The reliability of any test result is only as good as the care used in securing the specimen, the correct use of an anticoagulant, if needed, the quality of the specimen taken (i.e., free of clots or contaminants; not hemolyzed), and the care with which the sample has been treated after collection but before it reaches the laboratory for testing. Once in the laboratory, competent examination techniques are achieved only by practice, care, and diligence.
