Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

  • Chapter

Abstract

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a new concept in the etiology of disease [3]. It is defined as acute, transient coagulation occurring in the flowing blood throughout the vascular tree which may obstruct the microcirculation. It may or may not result in an accumulation of fibrin but does involve the transformation of fibrinogen into fibrin. It includes the agglutination of platelets and red cells and the sticking of leukocytes.
