Abstract
Stratification is one of the fundamental concepts in algebraic geometry and the theory of singularities. The study of stratifications originated with the work of Whitney and Thom ([71], [89]) on singularities of analytic varieties. Our purpose, in this chapter is to give a brief exposition of Thom-Whitney stratification theory. It is not our intention to provide ,the details in the development ([36,49,50,65,78,90]) of this theory. We do not prove those fundamental theorems stated in section 4. Our primary concerns in this chapter are a detail study of Whitney’s regularity conditions and how to decide whether a stratification of a variety is regular. Many examples have been provided to illustrate these points.
