Abstract
It is difficult to evaluate the retroperitoneal area by ordinary radiographic methods, since space-occupying lesions must be far-advanced in this region before they can be detected. And, despite the standard roentgenographic work-up for patients, which includes intravenous urography, barium enema, lymphangiography, retroperitoneal air insufflation, and angiography, the nature of the lesion may remain unclear. This is especially true of avascular masses and surgery may be required for definitive diagnosis. However, sonolaparotomy, as a noninvasive, safe, and simple technique for detecting, evaluating, and differentiating retroperitoneal lesions, has been rewarding.
