Abstract

Intraperitoneal fluid assumes the form of either a transudate (low protein) or exudate (high protein). Common causes of transudates include portal obstruction, either intrahepatic or extrahepatic. Intrahepatic disease is usually cirrhosis of its many etiologies. Extrahepatic obstruction occurs with portal vein obstruction. Congestive heart failure, renal disease, and benign tumors of the ovary also cause ascites.
