Abstract

The least profound among the properties of an algebraic system are usually the relations among its elements (as opposed to the relations among subsets of it and functions on it). In this section we shall discuss some of the elementary relations that hold in Boolean algebras. Since we shall later meet a powerful tool (namely, the representation theorem for Boolean algebras) the use of which reduces all elementary relations to set-theoretic trivialities, the purpose of the present discussion is more to illustrate than to exhaust the subject. An incidental purpose is to establish some notation that will be used freely throughout the sequel.
