Abstract

Two different rock types are predominantly composed of MgO and SiO2: Ultramafic rocks and the much rarer siliceous magnesite rocks. The major mineral constituents of ultramafic rocks are olivine, orthopyroxene, and/or clinopyroxene, and the MgO/FeO ratio of the rocks is very high. CaO is another component present in clinopyroxene.
