Abstract
The development of reliable methods for measurement or estimation of the surface fluxes of heat, moisture and momentum over the ocean is of importance in many meteorological and oceanographic problems and programs. The GARP programs AMTEX I and II (Air Mass Transformation Experiment) in February 1974 and 1975 were organized investigations of the atmosphere and ocean responses to the outbreak of cold air from the mainland China across the Kurshio and Ryukyu Islands (Japan). Air-sea exchanges are large during these outbreaks, as wind speeds are of the order of ten m/s, air-sea temperature differences are about 5°C and, following occluded fronts, evaporation rates are also large. A portion of the AMTEX program was concerned with the measurement of surface fluxes by a variety of techniques at several locations under high wind, high flux level conditions.
