Transfer RNA and Cytokinins

Abstract

When it was observed that soluble RNA (sRNA) played a vital role in protein synthesis, this low-molecular-weight species of RNA attracted much attention. The major species of sRNA are polynucleotide chains containing about 80 nucleotides and having a molecular weight of about 25,000 daltons and a sedimentation coefficient of 4S. Because sRNA was observed to accept amino acids and transfer them to growing polypeptide chains on ribosomes, it is now generally referred to as 4 “transfer” RNA (tRNA). However, not all sRNAs are involved in the transfer of amino acids. For example, E. coli contains a species of RNA (sedimentation coefficient 6S) that can be isolated from the supernatant fraction obtained by sedimentation of ribosomes. This polynucleotide, which has recently been completely sequenced, is composed of 184 nucleotides (Brownlee, 1971). Its function is unknown.
