Abstract
In this chapter we discuss four kinds of data structures: references (pointers), arrays, records and files. References have a single component, arrays and records have several components (the number being determined when the structure is declared) and files have a dynamically varying number of components. The components of arrays are accessed with a subscript (e.g. A[3]) whereas the components of records are accessed with a name (e.g. R.three). The components of files are accessed by moving a ’window’ up and down the file.
